Day 1
Day 1

Monday:  We go to Mt Ruapehu reasonably often, so let’s go another way - Tirau for lunch before passing through the townships of Mangakino and  Whakamaru as we wind our way around the back of Lake Taupo.  We cross Kuratau River and take a detour into the lakeside village of Waihi (another one - Ron just loves these surprise detours!).  Through Tokaanu and up onto the Central Plateau to arrive at our grand home for the next two nights – Chateau Tongariro Hotel.

Day 2
Day 2

Tuesday:  At midday we travel up the mountain to the Whakapapa Ski Field, where we board the brand new Mt Ruapehu Sky Waka Gondola - each ‘cabin’ can seat 10 people in Business Class Luxury, with hand stitched leather seats and floor to ceiling windows.  The ride is 1.8km long taking you to the Pinnacles Restaurant 2,020m above sea level, making this the highest eatery in NZ.  This award winning restaurant offers stunning views with a beautiful Buffet Lunch.  Mid-afternoon we re-board the Sky Waka Gondola and glide back down the mountain and return to the Chateau.  In September there should still be plenty of snow.

Day 3
Day 3

Wednesday:  Another highlight - This morning we take a 35-minute fixed wing plane flight over Lake Taupo and then climb to 10,000 feet over all three volcanoes – Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe and to the summit of Mt Ruapehu viewing the active Crater Lake.  This afternoon, the Northern Explorer train is due to pick us up at 1.15pm and take us, via the 1898 civil engineering masterpiece (Raurimu Spiral), through to Auckland City.  Ron will be waiting in the SHIP n SHORE coach at 6.50pm to take us home.
