Hobbiton Day One
Hobbiton Day One

We begin with morning tea at the Service Centre, then an early lunch stop at Huntly.  Down the road, in Gordonton, we meet Cheryl and Dave who will share what it is like to run a herd of 120 Alpacas in the Waikato.  They will explain about the care, natural history, fleece use and the processing of fibre into products.  Get up close and personal with these gorgeous animals.  Hug them and feed them!

Mid-afternoon we arrive at our overnight accommodation, a destination in itself, Okoriore Hot Springs Hotel.  Enjoy a soak in the natural hot springs, set amongst native bush.

Late afternoon we depart our hotel bound for the Hobbiton Movie Set – Experience the Shire as you have never before, your evening will begin with a fully guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set (during daylight hours), with countless fascinating stories and anecdotes about the trilogies.  Your tour concludes at the Green Dragon Inn, where you will be provided with an exclusive Southfarthing beverage, before enjoying a ‘Banquet Feast fit for a Hobbit’.

If you think you have eaten food of every type, think again!  The food is so olde worlde that you really do think you’ve been transported back to some medieval time.  After dinner, your guide will take you back out to stroll the wandering paths of Hobbiton, illuminating your way with individual hand-held lanterns, path lighting and the glittering starlight, as you see the village breathtakingly lit up.  We return to our hotel late in the night.

Hobbiton Day Two
Hobbiton Day Two

Day Two:  A late start today before we head to Arapuni Dam for a drive across this dramatic historic engineering feat and then walk across the Arapuni Suspension Bridge, built in 1925, as access for the dam workers from the ‘top camp’.  Still in this fascinating area we walk into nearby Te Waihou or Blue Springs to see the clearest water you are ever likely to see.  So clear, that most of our bottled water is sourced from here.

Time to head north with a lunch stop at Matamata (see the amazing Visitors Centre to complete the Hobbiton theme) and a comfort stop at Mercer to pick up Pokeno Bacon supplies and have an ice cream.
