We are planning to fly from Auckland to Darwin and begin our tour at the very top of Australia.  In Darwin we’ll cruise the Adelaide River on the Jumping Crocodiles Cruise, visit the Humpty Doo Pub (such an amazing pub!) and enjoy the spectacular Sunset Harbour Cruise.  You may even spend an evening star gazing at the Deckchair Movies – some of us did this last time and it was a real hoot!

Then it’s time to board The GHAN for our Coast to Coast 3-night train journey from Darwin to Adelaide (Gold Class with all meals included).  We will do off-train excursions at Katherine Gorge National Park (made up of 13 gorges carved through 25-million-year-old sandstone), Alice Springs Wildlife Park and township with lunch in the Outback …but the most exciting excursion will be spending time at the ‘underground’ town of Coober Pedy.  Tour the town and see the Serbian Orthodox Church (photo), built underground with rock carvings in the walls.  Visit the underground Umoona Opal Mine and Museum, with the opportunity to purchase opals.  See the grassless golf course and travel along a portion of The 5,300km Dog Fence, which is the longest continual construction in the world.  After 2,979km we roll into Adelaide and spend a few days getting our bearings, with some comprehensive sightseeing of the city and markets, including the tram ride through historic Glenelg.

The second part of our tour is one of our favourites – There is no better way to see the Murray River and a slice of the hauntingly beautiful and dramatic Australian outback than on the 4-night Murray River Cruise.  Unlike most modern-day river vessels, with imitation paddles, PS Murray Princess (Outside Cabins with private bathrooms) is propelled by an authentic, massive stern paddlewheel.  Drift unhurried and quietly through old riverside ports and indigenous culture areas through some of the driest parts of the driest continent.   We tie up each night, with the opportunity to walk ashore with expert guides and local historians.   At cruise end we return to Adelaide for our return flight to New Zealand and our awaiting SHIP n SHORE shuttles.
